There’s been waves and waves of content over the past couple of weeks marking the 20th anniversary of 9/11. I thought about writing something, but I’m not really going to get into it. We’re all tired. Instead I want to share something that I’ve been listening to over the years as a way to sort of tune out and reflect on everything that’s happened. They’re called The Disintegration Loops by ambient composer William Basinski. On 9/11 he was recording music on his rooftop as he watched the towers burn. The tape loops slowly deteriorated each time it passed through the tape head. It was sort of an accident. But what he captured on tape was shocking. A monastic symphony inside of an ancient cave. It sounds like something is ending, or beginning, depending on the frame of mind you are in when listening. And it’s very soothing. Enjoy:
