My former Los Angeles Daily Journal co-worker Meghann Cuniff, who has been running all around courts in LA and Orange County over the past handful of years and maybe most famously made Michael Avenatti’s life a living hell, wrote this week about the latest in the Tom Girardi saga and the battle over his competency to stand trial. She also wrote about the LADWP saga. Definitely check out her stuff if you haven’t, and support her with a paid subscription if you can. Media companies continue to disappear, and the ones still around keep shedding journalists. Los Angeles has been especially depressing. While the Hollywood writer’s strike is entering its 9th week, many journalists have been reduced to gig workers who constantly beg for money, and most don’t benefit from the collective protection of a union. Reporting takes time and a lot of work, but it can be really powerful. I’ve always felt weird asking for money and marketing myself, since I pretty much do this randomly on the side. I don’t put up a paywall. Paying is optional. But to those that have supported me, many thanks.
